Russian Twist

Russian Twist

A great way to build strength in the torso, the Russian twist is an exercise that works the abdominal muscles by using a twisting motion through your core.

Typically used to build core strength, the exercise is often done by athletes in sports like boxing, baseball, swimming, track and field, golf, tennis, hockey, and lacrosse.

A Wartime Exercise

Though the origin of the term “Russian Twist” isn’t known, it’s believed that the exercise was created as an exercise for Russian soldiers in the former Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Since then, the exercise has caught on in a variety of sports training regiments, including that of weightlifting and bodybuilding. However, the focus on core strength is one that can greatly benefit several different types of athlete, and is one of the reasons the exercise is so widely used today.

The Modern Russian Twist

This core strengthener is fairly accessible, and as long as you’ve got access to a medicine ball, weight plate, or dumbbell, it can even be done in the comfort of your own home.

The exercise is done by sitting on the floor with knees and his bent. Hold the weight out in front of you. Once you’re ready, twist your torso as far as you can to the left. Come back to the center, and repeat the motion on the right.

The technique has evolved from those that were typically done during the days of the Cold War. At that time, there was less of an emphasis on the use of weights.

However, as time has passed, lifters have realized that using weights can be a great way to add more intensity to the exercise. This provides more stability and strengthening work for the core.

A Popular Exercise

Because of how accessible this particular exercise is, it’s widely done by lifters and athletes of all ages and abilities. There is quite a bit of variation to the exercise, allowing for different kinds of weights and different weight levels to be used, depending on the comfort and skillset of the user.

This means that the exercise has become highly important and regularly used in most weightlifting and strength-building routines. Just one aspect of an overall workout, the Russian twist certainly helps build on other exercises that may be done throughout a given workout regiment.

You’ll likely see people doing the Russian twist in any number of gyms or fitness spaces, as it is incredibly common for core-based workouts.
